Gate Automation - What's That?!

All these fancy words, what does it mean? The simple explanation is that you place a motor on a gate and make it open and close that gate for you. Getting the motor is as easy as going to Amazon.com and choosing from the many options. Getting it to work however, is not always straightforward. When motors fail, its usually because your installer had not given consideration to the small stuff, or you’ve not made the effort to maintain the equipment.

The Build

Not all gate motors are built the same, likewise not all gates are built the same. When you automate your gate, there are many factors that affect its smooth operation. How your gate is built is of great importance to how easy it will be to get it automated. I know, the cost to get a good gate is more than you may have bargained for but cutting corners means trouble later down the line.

The aim of a well-built gate is to make opening and closing effortless. This means that hinges, wheels, tracks, etc. must be as level and well lubricated as possible. We’ve seen too many instances of poor build causing issues down the line for the property owners.

Since your gate installation may not be done by us, we most times have to visit your site to properly advise you as to what challenges you can face down the line with a gate

Getting a Motor

Most gate motor manufacturers will give you a basic idea of the gate specs their motor will comfortably operate. However, you should always use the information they provide as a guide and not a rule. We’ve seen very small gates, with rusted hinges give more problems to close than large, heavy gates which are built properly.

The motor you use, should take into consideration how easily your gate moves. A rule of thumb is that the gate should be able to open or close when you apply pressure with the tip of your little finger. Heavier gates will require a little more effort but with the same principle. If it is not easy to shift your gate, then you should seek advice on what can be done to correct any issues BEFORE a motor is installed. Contact us and we can help with that.

Accessories and Sensors

Usually, a gate motor can operate without sensors but in some countries, it is a requirement to install certain sensors on a gate. Some of the most popular sensors and accessories are:

  • Photo Sensors
  • Vehicle Presence / Loop Sensors
  • Safety Edge sensors
  • Locks
  • Warning Lights
  • Key Openers
  • Remotes

Some of these you may never use, however, you must keep in mind to check your installer before you make a purchase.

My gate has a problem - Can it be fixed?

The best answer in this situation is to get a professional to take a look. You may need to pay a small fee for their time, but it will save you lots of time, money and frustration in the long run. An experienced professional will be able to tell you about your issue within the first ten minutes. Some may require up to an hour to figure it out. Nevertheless, most issues can be remedied, but not without cost.
