What is Wi-Fi

Nowadays, we cannot turn around without noticing, someone using a wireless connection to undertake some menial task like, messaging, or listening to music, or reading. Our focus today is on the topic of network connectivity using a wireless signal (Wi-Fi). You can use Wi-Fi to connect your TV, smartphone, tablet, and computer with your wireless router. Using the airwaves to communicate, your devices can be vulnerable to hackers, cyber-attacks, and other threats. It is especially crucial to bear this in mind if you are connected to a public Wi-Fi network.

The Best Wi-Fi

Let me get straight to the point on this topic. There’s no such thing as best Wi-Fi. Good Wi-Fi signal is elusive, and so many things can affect your signal. These things can range from your phone manufacturer to what type of walls you have. No single Wi-Fi is best, however, consumer brands have touted some really amazing specifications which range from advanced security to increased throughput to lure consumers to make that purchase. Essentially, the best throughput comes from a cable connection, however, if you’re unable to use a cable then Wi-Fi fills in the void.

So why can’t my Wi-Fi reach FAR like the one in the Hotel?

The answer to this question is simple. The Hotel spends more money on their Wi-Fi installation and thus has a better system installed. This is the simple version, however the truth of it is that the Hotel, probably has multiple wireless antennas installed all around their property in key areas, so that signal drop is minimized. All these small antennas work like one big antenna and gives the impression that the signal is strong at every corner of their property, coming from one internet router. Technically we can go on for days about how this works, but we just would like to let you know that not everything is always like they seem.

I want one like that

Well, to get one like what the hotel has, you would first have to run…..(you guessed it right)… CABLES. This is the most reliable way to get a signal which does not drop for unknown reasons. These cables would connect to a controller, whether, hardware or SaaS (Cloud based), and allow you synchronize the connection of multiple antennas. Usually these antennas, are referred to as Access Points or AP’s. To find out where on your property you need to install these antennas (or Access Points) an in depth survey will be done on your property in order to determine where you’d place these AP’s. We can help with that.

Are you saying my Wi-Fi at home is no Good?

No, on the contrary, some of the better Wi-Fi devices are the ones provided to you by your internet provider when you sign up. So many things affect your speed that you cannot really blame any ONE thing for slow speeds. For example 2.4 Ghz vs 5 Ghz; one offers a greater throughput, but at a shorter range than the other. With all that we’ve discussed, Wi-Fi issues are sometimes difficult to troubleshoot, as well as unnecessary. Sometimes a repeater or booster is just what you need to give you the boost that you want. Repeaters are inexpensive and effective; they get the job done

Why do I have full bars and my internet is still slow?

The answer to this is called a bottleneck; the term used to describe a restriction of flow. Some bottlenecks occur by design and others by misunderstanding basic Wi-Fi principles. This is why you should get a professional to help you troubleshoot (and not your cousin Bob who only has a router at his house and has never installed even a Wi-Fi extender). The number of bars you have does not always indicate how much bandwidth you’re going to receive at your device. Also don’t just install a repeater at a weak signal point at your house and expect it to work miracles for your speeds. This short video explains simply what you basically need to know.
